Peru's Endemic Birds: Green-and-white Hummingbird

The Green-and-white Hummingbird is a species found exclusively on the eastern slopes of the Andes from Huánuco to Cuzco. It is classified in the family Trochilidae and was previously placed in the genus Amazilia, but molecular studies now classify it in the genus Elliotomyia.

Identification

  • Size: About 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in length
  • Coloration: Bright green upperparts and white underparts, with green on the sides of the chest and belly
  • Bill: Nearly straight, with a black upper mandible and reddish lower mandible
  • Tail: Gray underneath, lacking the white seen in similar species like the White-bellied Hummingbird

Habitat and Distribution

  • Endemic Region: Eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru
  • Elevation Range: Between 1,000 and 2,750 meters (3,280 to 9,020 feet) above sea level
  • Preferred Habitats: Humid forests, forest edges, clearings, and secondary growth
  • Notable Locations: Frequently observed in areas such as Machu Picchu

Behavior and Ecology

  • Diet: Primarily feeds on nectar from flowering plants; also eats small arthropods
  • Vocalizations: Produces a short, repeated phrase of three high-pitched notes, “tseet-chew-chip,†and another call with two rising notes followed by a descending stuttering series
  • Breeding: Builds cup-shaped nests made of plant fibers and spiderwebs, usually placed on horizontal branches of small trees

Conservation Status

  • IUCN Red List: Listed as Least Concern
  • Population Trend: Currently stable, with no major threats identified
