How to Dress for Birding Trips in Peru ?

Birding in Peru involves a wide range of climates and terrain, even within a single day. Because conditions can change quickly across elevations and habitats, practical clothing and gear choices are essential for comfort and safety.

Clothing

Layering is strongly recommended, as temperatures can vary significantly between day and night and within just 24 hours.

Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants help protect against sun, vegetation, and insects, while quick-dry fabrics are easiest to wash and reuse during the trip. Insect protection is especially important in lowland and forested areas; long socks that allow pants to be tucked in help reduce exposure to vegetation and insects.

Clothing should be loose-fitting, durable, and suitable for getting dirty or muddy.

Muted clothing colors such as tan, khaki, brown, grey, or green are bird-friendly, as they are less conspicuous than bright colors or white.

Footwear

Comfortable footwear is essential for birding in Peru. Supportive hiking / rain boots with good traction are recommended for muddy or uneven forest trails, while lighter walking shoes are suitable for travel days and less demanding terrain. Proper footwear helps reduce fatigue and improves stability on wet or slippery surfaces.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen with a high SPF is important at all elevations. Sun exposure can be intense, particularly at higher altitudes where UV levels are stronger, even on cooler or overcast days. Regular application helps prevent sunburn and long-term skin damage during extended time outdoors.
