Photography Gear Recommendations

- We work with Canon. If you prefer other brands, the following recommendations would need to be adapted to their systems.
- For bird photography in Peru, we favor two cameras:
- Canon R7 (APS-C): provides a 1.6× crop factor—more "reach" with the same lens; it is also lightweight and fast
- Canon R5 / R5 II (Full-Frame): offers better high ISO performance, dynamic range, and bokeh quality; an ideal camera if you prioritize detail and versatility
- We get the best results with these lenses:
- RF 100–400mm f/5.6–8 IS USM: lightweight, compact, and stabilized
- EF 100–400mm L II (with EF→RF adapter): balanced performance, professional-level sharpness, excellent effective reach; compatible with R-series via adapter
- RF 200–800mm f/6.3–9 IS USM: extreme reach, super-telephoto zoom, ideal for very distant subjects
- RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM: wide aperture, excellent for fast action and low light; produces beautiful bokeh
- RF 600mm f/4L IS USM: extreme reach, professional-grade sharpness and detail
Recommended camera + lens setups
- Best lightweight + reach combo (high-altitude birding, cityscapes): R7 + RF 100–400
- Extended reach with high quality (high-altitude birding): R7 + EF 100–400L II
- Pro-level versatility for birds in flight and perched shots (garden and forest birding): R5 / R5 II + RF 100–500L
- Fast action with stunning bokeh (aquatic, garden, forest, and high-altitude birding): R5 / R5 II + RF 400mm f/2.8
- Pro setup: long reach and maximum sharpness (landscapes and aquatic birding): R5 / R5 II + RF 600mm f/4
Tripod?
- ≤ 400 mm lens in good light → Many prefer shooting handheld (especially in high-altitude birding)
- ≥ 400 mm lens or in low light → Use a solid tripod with a fluid head for smooth tracking (recommended for garden, forest, and landscape birding)
